Picasso Museum Spain
January 12, 2018

With the creation of the Picasso Museum in Málaga, Andulicia, Spain a dream held by Pablo Picasso has been fulfilled: a dedicated venue for his work in the heart of his beloved native city. The Museum is set in an ancient Andalusian style Palace dated from the 16th century (Palacio de Buenavista, declared a National Monument in 1939) featuring renacentist architecture and Mudéjar elements.
Strategically located in Málaga, Spain’s historic city center, this impressive museum has become a major attraction. Splendidly restored, it is wonderfully located in the old part of the city. To automate an historical building such as this one was quite a challenge for Vantage. It was important to preserve the restored elements and historical artwork yet provide optimal lighting control as well as a highly sophisticated audio/video system for events in the 89,340 square foot space.

La Mirada began as a modest stone adobe in the Mexican period. It was later remodeled to become an elegant home where the great stars of silent film were entertained. In 1994, the gallery wing was added to accommodate outstanding exhibitions that change several times a year. These changes represent a tremendous amount of work for the curators and facilities team. New art is hung on the walls and adjusted and at the same time the lighting fixtures have to be re-aimed and light levels readjusted and memorized by the control system. The competitive system installed since 1994 no longer performed this function adequately. Adjusting light levels would take four to five days. It’s important that Curators have the ability to move around the space while adjusting light and scenes to make sure the art work is presented optimally.

The Vantage system offers the ability to control all types of lighting technologies, while also providing simplified or complex control and integration. For example, in the lobby area the system was only required to offer automatic and automated control over the lighting, while in the new Gallery area lighting control, full AV integration and mechanical integration were required. Vantage gave the client the varying levels of control they needed without having to employ a separate control system. This really simplified things for the client, who only had a single system to operate..
